BURLINGTON, Vt. – Three University of Maine pitchers combined to allow only three hits here Saturday, but it was only good enough for a split of the Black Bears’ North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader against Vermont at Centennial Field.
The Catamounts won the opener 2-1 despite being two-hit by Maine’s Pete Fisher, but the Bears bounced back for a 2-0 victory in the second game on the strength of a combined two-hitter by Josh Harriman and Garrett Quinn.
Sunday’s doubleheader was rained out and has not been rescheduled. Each team must play a minimum of 20 NAC games, and these were the first contests lost by either ballclub.
Maine, which has played 38 straight games on the road this season, returned to Orono with a 8-30 record, including a 4-6 NAC mark. Vermont is 7-13-1, 5-5 in league action.
In the nightcap, Harriman allowed only a fourth-inning single by Matt Bryant while hurling five innings of shutout ball. He walked four and hit three batters, but Quinn blanked Vermont over the final two frames to notch his fifth save.
Maine scored both of its runs in the fourth inning off loser Craig McFadzean. Ron Coombs singled to center and T.J. Sheedy walked. Both moved up on Tony Bianchi’s sacrifice bunt.
John Ellis plated the first run with a single off the glove of second baseman Matt Bryant, then Jeff Longo delivered a sacrifice fly for the second run.
In the opener, Jerry Lynde scattered three hits while lowering his earned run average to 0.90 in three NAC starts. He fanned five and walked none.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ellis singled and took second on Quinn’s sacrifice. One out later, Rex Turner stroked an RBI single up the middle.
Vermont countered in the fourth. Ethan Barlow singled with one out, raced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on suicide squeeze bunt by Keith Carter.
The Cats scored the game-winner in the sixth. Barlow laced a leadoff double, moved up on a fielder’s choice, and rode home on Carter’s sacrifice fly.
Fisher, who struck out four and walked four, suffered the third loss in his last four starts. In those games, Maine has scored only six runs on his behalf.
