Braves, Knights split 2 games

BANGOR – Reliever Kathy Hendrickson of the University of New England forced a two-out, bases-loaded popout to stave off Husson College’s comeback attempt in the nightcap of Monday’s college softball doubleheader at Husson College.

UNE won 18-17 to split the series with the Braves, who won the opener 10-1 in six innings.

Emily Burrill led the Braves in game one with three singles, a home run, and two RBIs. Sandy Jack added a single, double, and two RBIs, and Michelle Cogan put the mercy-rule shortened game away with a six-inning, three-run homer. Jen Russ banged out two singles.

The Braves’ Amanda Pomerleau struck out 11 and walked two while tossing a four-hitter.

In game two, Jess Laney led UNE with a single, two doubles, home run, and drove in three runs as part of the Knights’ 21-hit attack. Jen Boudreau added three singles, a triple, and five RBIs, and Becky Daigle contributed three singles.

Husson’s Lisa Keene had three singles and an RBI, Cara Mercer rapped a single, double, and two RBIs, and Amy Coppola finished with a single and double.
