BREWER – Any time the bottom of the order can produce some offense, it’s a bonus.
Brewer High School’s number eight and nine hitters, junior catcher Troy Corey and sophomore center fielder Eric Pinkham, went five-for-six with three doubles, four runs batted in and four runs scored to rally the Witches to a 14-5 win over Old Town at Heddericg Field Wednesday.
Pinkham went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and Corey went 2-for-2 with two doubles including a two-run double. Corey, who also walked twice, scored three times and Pinkham crossed the plate once.
Brewer is now 6-1 while Old Town fell to 2-3.
“I’ve been struggling lately but Coach told me to wait back on the ball and try to drive it up the middle,” said Corey.
Corey and Pinkham triggered a decisive six-run rally in the fifth inning that erased a 4-1 Old Town lead.
Corey drew a leadoff walk and Pinkham pulled a sharp single to right. Chris Whitney, in his first at-bat of the season, spiked a soft seeing-eye line drive single to center to load the bases.
Mark Blaine then hit a soft roller to third baseman Sean Dickey, whose late throw to the plate sailed wide and went to the backstop for an error.
Catcher Bryan Goody chased the ball down but threw it past pitcher Jeremy Miller covering the plate, allowing two more runs to score and tie the game.
Donnie Sawyer singled to left and Mike Kane followed an opposite-field ground ball single to left. Sawyer was gunned down at second, however.
Aaron Largay hit a run-scoring double over right fielder Rya Aaron Largay hit a run-scoring double over right fielder Ryan Doucette’s head; Dakota Therrien had an RBI fielder’s choice and the final run of the inning scored on an error by first baseman Jared Foster.
“Our job at the bottom of the order is to get on base so the top of the order can drive us in and that’s what they did,” said Corey.
Sawyer had his second and third hits of the game, a one-out double and a two-out RBI single, in the seven-run sixth inning rally. Corey and Pinkham had back-to-back two-run doubles in the middle of the uprising and Largay singled in a run.
Sophomore righty Bruce Morneault picked up the win with three innings of impressive one-hit, one-run relief. He fanned four and walked three.
“Bruce goes right after the hitters. He shut them down,” said Hewes.
Old Town took a 4-0 lead with four unearned runs off Brewer starter Dennis Roy, who left with a tender arm after three innings.
A botched rundown throw by Largay was followed by Jon Thomas’ RBI single and Ryan Doucette’s RBI double.
Corey doubled and scored on a Roy grounder in the second.
Sawyer joined Pinkham with three hits and Kane and Largay joined Corey with two apiece. John Powers had two hits for Old Town.
