ORONO — Trees will be planted at several locations when Orono celebrates Arbor Day on Sunday, May 19.
A tree-planting ceremony will be conducted on Mill Street at 1 p.m.
Town Councilors Dana Devoe and Beverly Sterna will read an Arbor Day proclamation and announce names of sponsors for 23 trees to be planted downtown and on Main Street.
At 2 p.m., residents of the community will join students and staff from Asa C. Adams School for a reforestation program at the barren play area in front of the school. Seven red maples, three mugho pines and many perennial plants will be planted. People with shovels and community spirit are encouraged to attend.
Orono hopes to become a “Tree City USA” based on these and other efforts. The town won a $5,000 grant from the State Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Program to pay for planting about 12 additional trees.
The public is invited to take part in Arbor Day activities. For information, call Tree Board Chairman Ann Pilcher at 866-7860.
