Delaware sets records, blasts Hofstra staff> Riccio double boosts Hartford

ORONO – Delaware unleashed a relentless, 27-hit barrage, breaking or tying 12 North Atlantic Conference Tournament records while eliminating Hofstra 27-2 in Friday’s second-round game at Mahaney Diamond.

In Friday’s first game, Hartford rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 7-6 victory over Northeastern.

Top-seeded Delaware, now 42-9, moves into today’s 11:30 a.m. game against the winner of Friday night’s Maine-Drexel game. Hartford, the No. 6 seed at 17-29-1, takes on the Maine-Drexel loser today at 3:30 p.m.

Northeastern bowed out of the tournament with an 18-26 record.

The Blue Hens rode a record-setting hitting performance by sophomore third baseman Brian August while battering the Flying Dutchmen. August went 5-for-6 with three homers and two doubles good for six RBIs and five runs scored. He set tourney single-game marks for home runs, hits, runs scored, and RBIs.

Delaware broke NAC tourney records with 27 runs, 27 hits, eight home runs, and nine doubles. The Hens tied the standard for runs in an inning with eight in the third.

Also, Matt Ardizzone set the record for doubles in a game with three in a 4-for-6, four-RBI effort, while Dan Colunio and Andre Duffie tied the at-bats mark with seven each.

Ethan Jack rapped four hits, including a solo homer and a two-run double. Colunio and Duffie each collected three hits. Chris Dillon scattered six hits through six innings to notch the win.

In Friday’s opener, the start of which was pushed back more than 90 minutes because of the morning rain, Hartford rallied to stay alive.

The Hawks, who hadn’t scored since the third inning, got started when Northeastern starter John Forneiro walked Brian Edge and Mike Sweeney singled to center. One out later, Mike Asaro plated a run with a double to right.

James Shanley walked, loading the bases for Earl Snyder, who flied out. However, John Riccio sent the Hawks into Saturday with a game-winning, two-run double to right field.

Hartford relief ace Dave Tober pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to pick up the victory. Michael Brennan set it up, allowing one run in three innings after replacing starter Chris Schroeder.

Riccio had two hits and three RBIs to pace Hartford, while Snyder provided a pair of singles. For the Huskies, Kevin Kim belted three hits, including a double, while Scott Bouchie stroked a solo homer and a single.
