Downs’ one-hitter boosts Bucks

BUCKSPORT – Sophomore pitcher Kelly Downs fired a one-hitter, struck out four and walked four, to lead undefeated Bucksport to the 4-3 schoolgirl softball win against Mount Desert Island Thursday.

Downs knocked out a one-run triple to help her cause and Kelsey Wardwell also hit an one-run triple. Jana Wardwell hit a double and a single and Kristen Ready hit two singles.

For Mount Desert Island, Shelagh Slack singled and Brianne Barker had an RBI grounder.

Katahdin 20, Lee 2

At Sherman Station, the Cougars pounded out 15 hits on their way to the five-inning win.

Renae Landry led Katahdin with a single, triple, home run and two RBIs, and Robin Kelley added a single and triple. Jill Kelly drove in a run and had three singles.

Katie Cormier and Tanya Mushero each singled and doubled for Lee Academy and Steph Thurlow crushed two doubles.

At East Millinocket, Penquis of Milo broke open a 2-2 game with a four-run fifth inning and then cruised to the win to stay unbeaten.

Abbie Bowen and Barany Chessa paced the Patriots with two singles and two RBIs each.

For Schenck, Carrie Lynch hit a double and a single.

Greenville 17, Valley 5

At Greenville, Sara Ward socked a two-run home run in the third inning to lead Greenville to the five-inning win.

Sarah Austin had a three-run double and Ward added a single for the Lakers.

Lindsay Cool had two singles and a double for Valley of Bingham.

At Hampden, the Warriors made the Broncos pay for their 11 errors with nine unearned runs for the win win.

Melissa Coppa singled three times and Rachel Henderson twice to lead Nokomis of Newport.

Meaghan Taylor and Sarah Trask each singled twice for Hampden Academy.

At Thorndike, Melissa Marriner drove in two runs with a double and two singles as Belfast got the win.

Monica Bryant, Katie Small and Liz Kelley all singled twice for the Lions.

Shannon Cross had two singles and a triple and Megan Williams had two singles and a double for Mount View of Thorndike.

At Camden Wednesday, freshman Liz Kelley’s two-run double was the difference as the Lions edged the Windjammers.

Christine Lesan ripped two singles and an RBI and Melissa Marriner had a double and a single for the winners.

Angie Pease hit a double to pace Camden-Rockport.

At East Machias, Kara Henderson singled twice and tripled to help the Eagles of Blue Hill beat up Washington Academy.

Monica Guptil and Marion Sprague each singled once for the Raiders.

At Bangor, Kim Beekman notched two singles to lead Ellsworth past John Bapst.

Marcie Damp had a two-run single for the winners.

At Howland Wednesday, Joy Allen spaced five hits and helped her own cause with a two-run single in a six-run, third-inning rally as Central of East Corinth built a 10-0 lead.

Teresa Dow had a double and two singles and drove in two runs for the Red Devils and Katrina Libby singled twice. Allen struck out five and walked five for the win.

Jennie Neal doubled, singled and knocked in a run for Penobscot Valley. Carrie Braley singled twice.

Wearne hurls no-hitter Woodland 19, Lubec 0

At Lubec, sophomore righthander Rachel Wearne spun a five-inning no-hitter to give the Dragons the win.

Wearne walked the leadoff batter and then retired the next 15 while striking out nine. She aided her own cause with two triples. Julie Pratt chipped in with two singles.

Hodgdon 8, Central Aroostook 7

At Hodgdon, Amanda Quint raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Sarah Stewart’s bunt down the first baseline for the Hodgdon win.

Quint, who singled twice, led off with a walk, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch for the Hawks. Wendy Ivey slammed a two-run triple.

Misty Hewitt cranked a three-run triple and singled twice for Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.
