EAST CORINTH – Angela Allen’s sacrifice fly with one out in the sixth inning delivered Marie Cookson with the winning run as the Central Red Devils defeated Mattanawcook Academy 4-3 in schoolgirl softball action Friday.

Cookson had reached on an infield error and been chased to third by a Jenn Bailey single.

Joy Allen went the distance for the win, scattering five hits while striking out five and walking three.

Teresa Dow had an RBI triple for Central and Allen aided her own cause with a run-scoring single.

Abbie Pickering and Angie Brawn had two singles each for Mattanawcook.

At Millinocket, Angela Philbrook’s two-run single tied the game in the fifth and her RBI single in the seventh lifted Stearns to the win.

Winning pitcher Sarah Kittrick struck out six while giving up five hits and not walking a batter.

Bucksport’s Kelly Downs was the hard-luck loser as she struck out nine while walking one, scattering nine hits.

At Bangor, Julie Murray ripped a solo homer, doubled, singled and drove in three runs to lead the Rams to the victory.

Becca Kinney had two doubles and a single while driving in four runs, May Moody hit a double and a single, and Alicia Utterback and Renee Richardson each had two singles.

Wendy Winslow notched three singles for Nokomis of Newport.

At Eastport, Deer Isle-Stonington piled up 20 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Shead. The Mariners won the opener 17-1 and took the second game 14-8.

In the first game, Rachel Pilling pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 in five innings, and contributed a double and two singles good for three RBIs. Leslie McDonald provided a double and two RBIs.

In the nightcap, Morgan Hardy knocked in three runs with a triple, a double and a single to pace the Mariners. Becky Pilling singled three times and Rachel Pilling added a double and a single.
