Bangor, Brewer, Searsport win

The field of Eastern Maine softball teams has been pared to 16 with the completion of Thursday’s regional quarterfinal action around the region.

In Class A, No. 2 Brewer edged No. 3 Cony of Augusta 3-2 and No. 4 Bangor nipped No. 5 Gardiner 3-2. Top-seeded Medomak Valley of Waldoboro eked out a 2-1 win over No. 8 Skowhegan in nine innings and No. 3 Messalonskee of Oakland bested No. 6 Presque Isle 5-3.

In the Class B ranks, No. 1 Winslow pounded No. 8 Hermon 17-0, No. 4 Camden-Rockport tripped up No. 5 Central of East Corinth 9-5, and sixth-seeded Mount Desert Island knocked off No. 3 Stearns of Millinocket 3-2.

In Class C, No. 1 Searsport took care of No. 8 Limestone 11-2 and No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy got past No. 4 Calais 2-1.

In Class D action, No. 2 Wisdom of St. Agatha ripped No. 7 Deer Isle-Stonington 14-3, No. 3 Jonesport-Beals thumped No. 6 Greenville 30-4, and No. 4 Machias edged No. 5 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook 5-4.

Bangor 3, Gardiner 2

At Bangor, Kori Dionne’s sacrifice fly to center field scored Cathy Flemming for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alicia Utterback led off the seventh with a single and Flemming came in as a pinch runner. Renee Richardson moved Flemming to second with a sacrifice bunt and Brianne Slamin singled, moving Flemming to third.

Becca Kinney had two singles and a double, Utterback and Slamin each singled twice, and Kristy Bowden added an RBI single for Bangor.

Kim Chadwick led Gardiner with a double and a single.

Medomak 2, Skowhegan 1 (9 inn.)

At Waldoboro, Christie Winchenbach scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Panthers the victory.

Winchenbach had walked and moved to third on an Alice Bishop single. Bishop led Medomak Valley with three singles.

Laura Shay gave the Indians a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second.

Class B

MDI 3, Stearns 2 (8 inns.)

At Millinocket, Jamey Lewis crushed the game-winning solo home run in the top of the eighth to power Mount Desert Island.

Lewis led the Trojans from the plate going 4-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored. Brianne Barker helped with a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Kamie Preble had two singles and a double for Stearns, while Kelly Daigle added two singles. Holly Masterson earned the win, scattering seven hits. She walked eight and struck out three.

Stearns left 13 runners on base, compared to MDI’s five, and left the bases loaded in the three innings.

Camden-Rockport 9, Central 5

At Camden, the Windjammers exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to down Central.

Nellie Peck led the Windjammers with two singles and a double. Samantha Hibbard, Terri Berg and Kristi Gautesen each had a single and a double, while Traci Armentrout added two singles.

Teresa Dow socked a solo homer in the first for Central. Angela Allen hit a single, double and a triple while Monica Cookson had three singles.

Winslow 17, Hermon 0

At Winslow, sophomore righty Maegan Gordon fired a one-hitter, striking out 14, to raise her record to 9-0.

Winslow unleashed a 13-hit attack led by Melissa Veilleux’s three singles, Kate Pooler’s triple and double, and Cindy Trapnell’s two singles.

Sara Devlin’s second-inning single was Hermon’s only hit.

Class C

Searsport 11, Limestone 2

At Searsport, Sarah Webster sent down 13 Limestone batters on strikes and allowed one walk on her way to a two-hitter and a win for the Vikings.

Webster helped her own cause with a triple, single, and a four RBIs as Angela Lavin and Sarah Leighton had two singles each for Searsport.

Coleen Dennis slammed two singles to pace the Eagles.

Wisdom 14, DI-Stonington 3

At St. Agatha, pitcher Tracy Guerrette aided her own cause with a two-run triple and single to spark the Pioneers.

Michelle Ouellette chipped in with four singles and two RBIs for Wisdom. Lena Chamberland added a single and double, and Jennifer Derosier singled twice.

Sam Hawkins slapped a two-run single for Deer Isle-Stonington.
