ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Brian Holzinger, whose late-game heroics propelled Rochester throughout the playoffs, scored the game-winning goal at 2:34 of the third period as the Americans defeated the Portland Pirates 2-1 Thursday night to win the Calder Cup.
Holzinger swung out from behind the net and tried a wrap-around shot that was stopped by Portland goalie Ron Tugnutt. But the rookie center, last year’s Hobie Baker Award winner as the best player in college hockey, gathered in his own rebound and swept it past Tugnutt.
