Soper, Falcons trip up Trenton in Zone 1 play

ELLSWORTH – There wasn’t much to choose between the Brewer Falcons and the Trenton Acadians in their Zone 1 American Legion game here Thursday night. The Falcons had four hits to the Acadians’ three as both teams received quality performances from their starting pitchers.

But the Acadians made six errors to Brewer’s two and the Falcons capitalized for a 4-1 win in a game called in the top of the seventh due to darkness.

All five runs in the game were unearned.

Righthander Chris Soper, who was 7-2 as a junior at Bucksport High School this spring, allowed only three singles to notch the win, striking out three and walking two. He threw 60 strikes among his 96 pitches.

Soper was also aided by his defense, which turned double plays in the first and second innings.

“The defense played really well today,” said the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Soper. “I felt okay. My change-up was my best pitch.”

“He had a good fastball and a good curve,” said Trenton first baseman Robbie Worcester. “His curve had a quick snap to it.”

Trenton Coach Jack Merrill said, “You can’t make six errors against a team like Brewer.”

Trenton’s Dan Curtis, who attended the University of Maine and hadn’t pitched in a game since last summer, allowed a double and three singles over six innings with two strikeouts and five walks.

Jody Peak was the offensive star for the Falcons with a pair of singles and three runs scored.

“Jody was really swinging a hot bat at the end of the high school season for us,” said Brewer Legion and Bucksport High School Coach Dave Gonyar.

Peak lined a single to center in the second, stole second

Peak lined a single to center in the second, stole second and scored on an errant pickoff attempt at first by Curtis.

He reached on a high chopping infield single in the fourth, continued to second on third baseman Rick McDonald’s throwing error and eventually scored when center fielder Derek Torrey dropped Jason Dority’s slicing liner.

“It was going away from me. But I had it in my glove and it dropped out,” said Torrey, who was using a teammate’s glove because he had forgotten his.

Trenton, now 1-1, got one back in the bottom of the fourth when Worcester drew a two-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Aaron Largay threw past first on Aaron Brown’s infield hit.

The 2-0 Falcons got that one back in the fifth when Matt Gilbert walked, went to second on a wild pitch, hustled to third on Dennis Roy’s grounder to third and scored when first baseman Worcester threw past third trying to nail him.

The Falcons got their final run in the sixth when Peak reached on a two-base throwing error by McDonald, Chad Gilley singled and Dority hit a run-producing chopper to second that eventually became a double play.
