ATLANTA – University of Maine runner Dereck Treadwell’s quest to make the Olympic team came up short Sunday afternoon.
The Milford native finished 11th in the 1,500 meter finals at the U.S. track and field trials with a time 3 minutes 46.38 seconds, nearly 3 1/2 seconds off the pace set by winner Paul McMullen of Ypsilanti, Mich., who ran a 3:43.86. The top three finishers made the American Olympic team.
Kennebunk’s Erik Nedeau finished fourth (3:44.11), after being outleaned at the tape by third-place finisher Jason Pyrah of Provo, Utah (3:44.03). Pyrah had a yard’s lead on Nedeau with about 100 yards to go before Nedeau caught up to him and then nearly beat him.
Brian Hyde, who finished second in the 1995 U.S. Championships, finished fifth at 3:44.13.
Treadwell started the race on the outside of the 14-man field. He stayed in the middle of the pack for the first 2 1/2 to 3 laps of the race and then gradually fell behind, finishing 11th.
Treadwell finished ahead of race-favorite Steve Holman, who ran near the front for most of the race before falling off to a second-to-last finish with a time of 3:47.44.
