ORONO – After this four-game homestand with Albany-Colonie, the Bangor Blue Ox know what it’s like to be the Boston Red Sox and Albany designated hitter Sean Gilliam knows what it’s like to be Joe Carter.
Carter always kills the Sox and Gilliam single-handedly murdered Bangor at Mahaney Diamond Tuesday night.
The Diamond Dogs edged Bangor 7-6 in nine innings in the first game and outlasted the Ox 11-8 in a back-and-forth nightcap – giving them an impressive sweep of the four-game series.
In the nightcap, Gilliam tattooed Bangor pitching, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs, and four runs scored. The performance capped a 6-for-8 outing in which he drove in seven runs and scored six.
“This is probably the best day I’ve ever had,” said Gilliam. “The ball is just jumping off my bat right now. This is the best season I’ve had, even going back to Little League.”
The imposing 6-footer, all 240 pounds of him, leads the Northeast League with 10 homers – two ahead of Bangor’s Corey Parker.
It was Gilliam’s three-run blast way over the 330-foot marker in left off reliever Darin Dabalack that won the game for Albany with no outs in the top of the seventh – a five-run seventh.
Albany’s Grant Sullivan (2-0) picked up the win in relief.
Bangor manager Dick Phillips refused interviews after the game, saying only “I’m just too [upset] right now. I’m liable to say something I’ll regret later.”
His frustration probasly had something to do with his pitchers giving up 25 hits and 18 runs in the two games – 32 runs in the last three games.
Wednesday’s day off presumably comes at a good time for Bangor.
The Blue Ox erupted for five runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap – erasing a four-run deficit.
Jello Cox led off by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. As he had in his two previous at-bats, Cox ended up scoring.
Lonnie Goldberg followed with a double down the left-field line and Robert “Popeye” Cole followed with an RBI groundout.
Next up was left fielder Tim Morrow, who crushed a 1-2 fastball over the left-field fence for his second home run of the twinbill.
Corey Parker’s single to left chased Albany starting pitcher Hipolito Pena in favor of reliever Grant Sullivan.
Gerald Davis then reached on a catcher’s interference call, putting runners on first and second for Garret Quaintance.
Quaintance delivered with an RBI single to right as Parker barely avoided the tag of Albany catcher Bill Maier. Davis then scored on a wild pitch to Carlos Mota before Mota struck out with the third out.
Bangor added an insurance run in the sixth on Chris Hummell’s leadoff single, Cox’s bunt, and a fielding error by first baseman Ron Lockett.
In the first game, Tim Morrow’s dramatic three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh went for naught as Albany-Colonie scored the winning run in the ninth and held on to win the opener.
Gilliam’s RBI single to left through a drawn-in infield scored David Simon, and the Blue Ox went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Ex-Husson College hurler Mark Hreben (0-2) went the distance, throwing 147 pitches.
Phillips elected to have Hreben pitch to Gilliam, despite having given up a leadoff double to Simon and Gilliam’s scorching-hot bat.
The Diamond Dogs improved their league-leading record to 18-5 while the Blue Ox dropped to 11-11.
It looked like another patented comeback win for the Ox after Morrow launched the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall in the seventh to tie the game.
Parker drew a walk, moved to second and third on wild pitches. The throw to third sailed left and Goldberg tried to score the winning run, but was thrown out at home by third baseman Paul Reinisch.
Albany reliever Scott Jenkins (3-0) picked up the win in relief after blowing the save.
The Blue Ox scored first with two runs in the first inning. After Cox led off with a walk, Goldberg’s single put runners at first and third.
Cole singled to left, scoring Cox. Goldberg stole third and, one out later, scored after Cole got caught in a rundown between first and second.
The Dogs got those runs back in the third. Gilliam hit a one-out RBI single through the gap on the left side of the infield.
David Simon, who singled ahead of Gilliam, took second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on another wild pitch. A double by Rafael Mercado scored Gilliam before Hreben avoided further trouble with a line drive out to third.
Home plate wasn’t crossed again until the top of the fifth.
