HOLDEN — They didn’t want to do it, but they had no choice. Members of the SAD 63 board of directors accepted “with regret” Monday night the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Lester Young.

Young, who has been SAD 63 superintendent for one year, said he is “looking at a job in Brewer.”

His resignation is effective Aug. 9.

In another matter, directors voted to use a 5,000-gallon fuel tank instead of a 2,000-gallon fuel tank to store heating fuel for the Holbrook School. The tanks were used previously to store fuel for school buses, but the buses now are being refueled off the school grounds.

The measure also means switching fuel from diesel to No. 2 heating oil.

Directors agreed to deactivate the 2,000-gallon fuel tank, which is located under a storage building in a concrete vault on school property. Ray Hardy, SAD 63 operations director, told directors that abandoning the 2,000-gallon fuel tank entails cleaning it and filling it with sand or concrete.

The 5,000-gallon tank, which must be hooked up to the boiler, will be up and running in time for school in the fall, he said.

Funds for the project, which would cost around $6,500, will come from Holbrook School renovations monies.

Directors also appointed a part-time computer coordinator for the Holbrook School and authorized the addition of cross country as a fall sport to the school.
