FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Al Sokaitis of the University of Southern Maine is among three current or former college coaches still in the running for the top basketball job at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The school’s search committee on Wednesday narrowed the field of 61 applicants to Sokaitis; Mark Adams, former Central Connecticut State head coach; and Ray Jones, former associate head coach at Idaho.
They are vying to replace George Roderick, who retired in April after 11 years to become the director of the Top of the World Classic, a new Division I basketball tournament to be hosted by Alaska Fairbanks.
The Nanooks play in the Division II Pacific West Conference.
Sokaitis’ bid is his second for a basketball job in Alaska. Five years ago he was a finalist for the head position at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Adams was replaced as head coach at Division I Central Connecticut after last season.
Jones has held numerous assistant coaching positions throughout the country before recently leaving his position at Division I Idaho.
