ELMIRA, N.Y. – Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd improved to 4-0 by pitching a six-hitter to lead the Bangor Blue Ox to a 6-1 win over the Elmira Pioneers in the first game of a Northeast League doubleheader Friday night.
The Pioneers came back to win the second game 5-2.
The Blue Ox move to 16-13 while Elmira’s record is now 14-17.
In the first game, the Blue Ox rallied early, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning to give Boyd all the run support he would need.
Tim Morrow hit a solo home run in the third inning for Bangor while Steve Puleo hit a double and a single.
For Elmira, Ed Mitchell hit two singles.
In the second game, Jose Marchan’s three-run double in the fifth inning gave Elmira a 4-2 lead and the Pioneers hung on for the win.
Steve D’Aquila scattered three hits over six innings before Mike Torres came on in the seventh to nail down his 10th save.
Ken Norman led the Pioneers with two singles and a double.
