Motorcyclist injured in I-395 crash> Alleged illegal U-turn sends Orono physician, 17-month-old to EMMC

BANGOR — An ophthalmologist from Ellsworth who practices in Orono was hospitalized Sunday after his motorcycle crashed into a car driven by a Bangor man who was allegedly attempting an illegal U-turn on Interstate 395.

Dr. David Kull, 54, of Ellsworth was listed in fair condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Sunday evening after his Kawasaki 750 Vulcan motorcycle crashed into Brian Guerette’s Dodge Omni. Kull was wearing a helmet.

According to Sgt. David Kane of the Bangor Police Department, Guerette, 25, of Bangor was attempting to make an illegal U-turn from the eastbound lane of I-395, in an authorized-vehicle-only lane, when Kull struck Guerette’s vehicle.

Guerette’s son, Brian Jr., 17 months, was treated at EMMC for cuts to his head and face and later released.

Guerette’s silver Omni was struck in the left rear passenger door. His son was seated on that side of the vehicle in a child safety seat, and the impact sent fragments of glass into the child’s head and face.

Neither Guerette nor his other passenger, Brandon Doyle, 8, was injured in the accident.

Scott Pettengill, 19, of Bangor witnessed the accident as he was driving home Sunday afternoon with his father, Ray.

Pettengill said he saw the Omni in the left lane. He said it had started to slow down and had its left turn signal on.

“He was turning into the authorized-vehicles-only lane,” said Pettengill, who was driving in the right lane, preparing to get off at Exit 3A.

Pettengill said he had passed the Omni when he heard a horn honk. He said he then turned around and saw the motorcycle hit the Omni.

“The Omni was on a 45-degree angle, headed into the authorized-vehicle-only lane,” said Pettengill. “The motorcycle crashed into the back of the car, and the guy flew head-over-heels.”

Pettengill said Kull somersaulted through the air, landing 15 feet away in a grassy ditch along the interstate.

“It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” said Pettengill. “It was horrific.”
