BANGOR – Low scores are not what you usually expect in the Greater Bangor Open held at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. But in the Pro-Am portion of the tournament low scores are the norm.
Wednesday’s kickoff event of the 1996 edition of the GBO saw five professionals at 63 or better.
Mike Lee of Palm Desert, Calif., led all players as he scorched the 18-hole course at Bangor Muni to the tune of a course record 10-under-par 61.
Kevin Giancola of New Britian, Conn., fired a 62 while Brad Lehmann of Louisville, Ky.; Jim Nickerson of Manchester and Greg Sweatt of Rock Hill, S.C. all carded 63s.
“It was there for the taking, but I heard one guy say it wasn’t that easy,” said Bangor assistant professional Mike Baker.
The combination of a short setup, accessible pin placements and soft greens resulted in a total of 29 of the 42 pros competeing in the Pro-Am portion scoring under par 71.
“Everthing is soft right now,” said Bangor head professional Brian Enman. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the tournament has some low rounds.”
The Pro-Am event is centered around the sponsors said Enman.
