LURCing perception

I am appalled by media reports that Land Use Regulation Commission members acted upon information they received long after the closing of the public comment period, and the form in which that information was presented to them.

As a sworn officer of a quasi-governmental agency, I would never read or act upon any information presented to me which is undated, unsigned and hand-delivered by some large corporation’s hired lackey on the eve of my making a major policy decision.

Despite their repeated denials of wrongdoing, the commissioners appear to have violated LURC’s own rules and should be held accountable. Another pubic comment period will not solve the credibility problems the commissioners have created for themselves. Resignations by the commissioners are the only way to begin restoring public confidence in LURC. Otherwise, the commission will continue to be perceived by the general public as nothing more than the handmaiden of the paper and forest products industries. Jack Pulis Gardiner
