BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Public, private lives

I am writing in response to the investigation of Lt. Brian Cox and his alleged involvement in an exotic dancing business that is operated by his live-in girlfriend.

The article written by Renee Ordway (BDN, Aug. 7) stated that when questioned about the propriety of his involvement in the business, Cox reportedly said that he had a personal life of his own. Well, I have a news flash for Cox. When you are a public official, a person in authority, you have no personal life. I’m surprised that in his 20 years of police work, no one ever told him that.

Lt. Cox has chosen a career that requires a great deal of professionalism and a high degree of moral character on or off the job. He should be making wise decisions as to whom he chooses for friends and companions.

This isn’t New York City! Here in Bangor, Maine, the adage, “Birds of a feather flock together,” still bears weight on a person’s character.

Maybe it’s time for the city to adopt a personnel policy stating that police officers will conduct their private lives in a manner that will reflect a positive image on the police force and the city as well. Norberta Butler Old Town
