BANGOR – Bangor High School girls soccer coach said senior striker Cathy Flemming has the “truest shot of anyone we’ve ever had.”
Brewer Coach Bill Schwarz said “she’s tough in front of the net. She gets her shot off quickly and she’s accurate with it.”
Flemming registered the second four-goal game of her career, including three first-half goals, to pace the Rams to an imposing 6-0 win over Brewer in the fog and mist at the Bangor High field Tuesday night.
“It feels really good,” said the 5-foot-4 1/2, 120-pound Flemming. “We were really psyched for the game because of the Bangor-Brewer rivalry. And they always play tough against us.”
Flemming gave the 2-0 Rams a lead they would never relinquish just 3:22 into the game; added her second eight minutes later and closed out the first-half scoring with eight minutes left.
Emily Morse, Sarah Parcak and Flemming added second-half goals. Parcak had a pair of assists to go with her goal and Morse added an assist. Susan Price and Katrina Abell had the other assists.
Morse set up Flemming’s game-opening goal with a nice pass across to her at the top of the penalty area.
“I didn’t get a good touch but the field was so wet the ball spun up off the ground,” Flemming said.
Her left-footer nestled between Brewer goalie Heidi Everett and the post to the goalie’s left.
Abell laid the ball over to Flemming for her second goal as she hit a low 14-yarder with her right foot that took a quick hop and glanced in off goalie Heather Hogan.
“I tried to go far post again because Coach [Ingalls] is always yelling at me to shoot to the far post,” grinned Flemming.
A terrific individual effort by the dynamic Parcak created Flemming’s third goal as she beat a defender down the left flank and ripped a low, left-footed cross into the penalty area where Flemming directed it past the helpless Hogan.
In the second half, Morse chipped the rebound of a Parcak shot over Hogan; Parcak ran past a Brewer defender onto a Price pass and slipped a left-footer into the far corner and Flemming capped her four-goal night with a shot that deflected in off a Brewer defender.
Bangor outshot Brewer 25-19. Anne Wright had six saves for the winners and Morse had three more. Hogan and Everett each had six stops for 0-1 Brewer.
