ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears improved to 3-0 with a pair of women’s soccer wins in the Diadora Invitational at Alumni Field, defeating Rhode Island 1-0 on Saturday and Providence College 3-0 Sunday.

Against Rhode Island, Sophie Lecot scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Cathy Brezinski with 5:30 left in regulation. Maine goalie Sheila Fenderson made four saves on 14 shots.

For Rhode Island, now 1-3, Sarah Moon made eight saves on nine shots.

In Sunday’s game, Renee Bussell scored two goals to pace the Black Bears. Lecot added a goal and Sheila Fenderson made six saves on 14 shots.

For 0-3 Providence, Sarah Gibbons made five saves on 17 shots.

Maine’s Bussell, Lecot and Stacey Seidewand were named to the all-tournament team. Wake Forest’s Cheryl Zimmermann was named most valuable player.

UM-Farmington 2, Thomas 1

At Waterville, Kristy Parent slid past goalie Tee Fecteau at the 26:45 mark in the first half for the game-winning goal as the Beavers edged the Terriers.

Parent also tallied the other goal for the winners and Pam Goyette turned back eight of 12 in net.

Nikelle Henderson scored off a direct kick for Thomas. Fecteau stopped 16 of 21 shots.

Colby 5, Norwich 0

At Waterville, Colby outshot Norwich 17-3 en route to an easy win.

Steph Zegras, Kara Schiebel, Cathy Neuger, Kim Waldron and Rebecca Ryan each tallied a goal for the White Mules, now 2-0. Heather Garni made three saves.

For Norwich, now 1-2, Elizabeth Haiter made 14 saves.

Men’s soccer

Maine 1, UMass 0

At Alumni Field in Orono, Mike Butler scored the only goal of the game at 31:18 of the first half to lead UMaine past Massachusetts.

Tim Pearson made three saves on 15 shots for UMass.

For Maine, now 2-2, Aaron Wymouth stopped five of nine shots.

UM-Presque Isle 3, St. Joseph’s 0

At Standish on Saturday, Steve Babineau scored two goals to lead UMaine-Presque Isle to a Maine Athletic Conference win over St. Joseph’s.

David Hamel added a goal for 3-0 UM-Presque Isle. Jeremy VonOesen made eight saves on 14 shots.

For St. Joseph’s, now 0-2, Mike Bolandz made 14 saves on 19 shots.

Husson captures tourney

At Castine, the Husson College Braves captured the Maine Soccer Classic held at Ritchie Field over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Braves got a shutout from goalie Aaron Sargent to earn the 3-0 win over the Univesity of Maine-Fort Kent.

Sargent was a flawless nine of nine as Jason Hill, Adam Hazelwood, and Eric MacDonald all had a goal apiece for 3-0 Husson.

Melik Khoury saved 16 of 20 shots for the 0-3 Bengals.

In game two, UMass-Boston downed Maine Maritime 3-1 and eliminated the Mariners from tournament contention.

Jose Fregoso tallied two goals for the 2-2 Beacons as Mike Cirner chipped in the other. Goalie Michael Tufts saved 12 of 13 MMA shots.

Farhan Zbarian scored for the 1-1-1 Mariners. Mark Thibodeau stopped 12 of 15 in goal.

UM-Farmington 4, Thomas 1

At Waterville, Jamie Beaudoin had two goals to lift the Beavers past the Terriers.

Laughn Berthiaume chipped in a goal for UM-Farmington as goalie Josh Verville saved three of 11 shots.

Michael Stinchfield scored for Thomas and Mike Lawrence saved seven of 11 shots.
