TOWNSHIP 22 — A man from Freedom was “extremely lucky” to survive after his car hit a moose on Route 9 between Aurora and Beddington Sunday night, said district Game Warden Philip White.

A hydraulic extrication device was needed to pull Christian Jones, whose age was unknown, out of his car. “The vehicle’s roof had rolled back and rolled down, and his head was sticking out on top of the roof,” White said. “He’s an extremely lucky man.”

White said that Jones was treated for minor injuries to his hands at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, and released. Neither EMMC nor St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor had any record of Jones’ receiving treatment there.

White said that speed was a factor in the accident, which took place where a newly repaved section of the road suddenly switched to an older, narrower stretch. He said that all drivers should be particularly careful this time of year when moose are more active.

“There’ll be some more [accidents] in the next few months,” White said.

There were no passengers in the car, which rolled off the road after hitting the moose, and no other cars were involved in the accident. The moose did not survive.
