Saturday was a bad day for all of Maine’s small-college football teams as Maine Maritime Academy, Colby, Bates and Bowdoin all lost.

Worcester State thumped MMA of Castine 30-7, Middlebury downed Colby College of Waterville 17-7, Tufts beat Bates College of Lewiston 24-14, and Amherst hammered Bowdoin College of Brunswick 46-0.

At Worcester, Mass., the Lancers lived up to their billing as one of New England’s Division III powers with a convincing win over the Mariners.

The Mariners took the lead on Steve Tardif’s 3-yard scoring run in the second quarter, but didn’t score again.

Worcester State forced two safeties and scored on a fumble on the game’s final play.

Middlebury 17, Colby 7

At Seaverns Field in Waterville, Coates threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tadhy Campbell with 23 seconds left in the first half to break a scoreless tie.

The Panthers extended the lead to 10-0 on Dudley’s 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, then made it 17-0 on a 24-yard TD toss from Coates to Fisher.

Colby scored late in the fourth on a 9-yard pass from P.J. Matson to Jarod DeShaw.

At Medford, Mass., the Bobcats pulled out to an early 14-0 lead, but were then victimized for 24 unanswered second-half points.

Bates dominated the first half with P.J. McGrail scoring on runs of 40 and 9 yards. But Jumbos running back Tim Kaufmann answered in the third quarter with two touchdowns, one for 31 yards and another from 1 yard out. Both were set up by interceptions.

Nate Herpich hit a 35-yard field goal for Tufts, and quarterback Dan Morse sealed the win with a 13-yard touchdown run.

At Whittier Field in Brunswick, Bob DiSabato ran for 50 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Lord Jeffs.

Amherst rolled up 511 yards compared to Bowdoin’s 77 yards, with Rich Willard completing 15 of 26 throws for 200 yards and a TD.
