Black Raiders end Stearns’ streak> Quick score doesn’t lead to letdown

WINSLOW – Quick scores don’t mean much to the Winslow Black Raiders.

Three weeks ago, Winslow put up a quick seven against Belfast only to fall 20-15.

And 76 seconds into the Black Raiders’ contest against Stearns Saturday, when senior tailback Randy Loubier rolled into the end zone on a one-yard scoring run at Gerry Poulin Memorial Field, no one was leaping out of the stands to tear down the goalposts.

But as it turned out, when Seth Karter put the extra point between the uprights, the 450 fans could have done just that as the Black Raiders dominated the defending Class C state champions for a 21-6 high school football victory.

The loss snapped a 16-game win streak by Stearns dating back to the start of last season.

Still smarting from the 27-7 loss to the Minutemen of Millinocket last season, the Black Raiders ruled the line of scrimmage with impunity as they held Stearns to 112 total yards and five first downs.

“Last year they kicked our butts basically,” said fullback-linebacker Alan Boucher, who picked off a fourth-quarter pass from Stearns quarterback Travis Cummings and raced 24 yards for the touchdown with five minutes, 54 seconds left in the game.

“We wanted to get it back, it was a big game for us [to] get home field advantage in the playoffs,” he said. “They were undefeated and this was revenge.”

Both Winslow and Stearns are 4-1.

The Black Raiders turned a 3rd-and-16 situation into a big play when Loubier went on a 45-yard rumble to the Stearns-4 on the first series before scoring two plays later.

Two series later, Winslow quarterback Rueben Lemelin capped a six-play scoring drive with his 36-yard run around left end for a 14-0 Black Raider lead.

Helping the Black Raiders drive was a 15-yard facemask penalty on Stearns, which racked up three penalties for 40 yards in the first quarter.

“I really felt in the first half, we had so many mental errors, we had too many men on the field, we had that fair-catch interference,” Stearns coach Art Greenlaw explained. “I told the kids at halftime that we had helped them a great deal, and that if we came out and moved the football, we could still get back in this.

“And I still maintain that,” he said. “And until that defensive score in the fourth quarter, I thought we were still in it, if we could put one decent drive together and then make some stops.”

Stearns’ offense struggled through the first half and couldn’t get any closer than the Winslow 30-yard line, but stalled when Cummings was sacked for a six-yard loss and threw three incomplete passes to end the threat.

“We didn’t do a real good job of blocking for [Cummings],” senior fullback-linebacker John Montgomery said. “He took some hard hits. We needed a little bit more time. We just didn’t execute on offense.

“They ran stunts and stuff like that and it was hard to pick them up. I thought we were well-prepared but they came out and did their job.”

The Minutemen’s best field position came with three minutes left in the game when Montgomery punted from his own 44 and his kick bounced off Todd Carter at the Winslow 20.

Aaron Thibodeau pounced on the ball at the 22 to give Stearns a fresh shot.

Stearns scored when Cummings hit Peter Richardson with an eight-yard pass with 2:06 left. A nine-yard run by Cory Streams and a four-yard Cummings pass to Montgomery helped set up the TD.
