Colby rallies by Bates

LEWISTON – Colby College rallied late in the second half to erase a 21-point lead by Bates and give the visiting White Mules their first win of the season, 28-21, over the Bobcats Saturday.

Colby’s Don Gage and Bates’ offensive miscues fueled the comeback. The sophomore fullback scored two of his three touchdowns and Bates muffed two punts in the final quarter.

Gage, who finished with 89 yards on 20 carries, scored the go-ahead TD with 2:20 left to play. Lawaun Curry rushed 18 times for 97 yards and a touchdown. Colby quarterback P.J. Matson completed 14 of 30 passes for 230 yards.

Bates QB Dan Hooley completed 17 of 33 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. P.J. McGrail ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.

Bowdoin 31, Wesleyan 8

At Middletown, Conn., quarterback Hayes MacArthur passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to their second win of the season and first against Wesleyan in the last seven meetings.

MacArthur finished with 216 yards on 19-for-31 passing. John Paquet totalled 74 yards on two receptions, both for touchdowns.

Wesleyan running back Tom Themistocles ran 16 times for 94 yards.

The teams combined for 11 total turnovers. Bowdoin intercepted Jake Fay three times and Kurt Strandson twice. MacArthur was picked twice.

At Castine, Steve Tardif of Biddeford ran for two touchdowns and Maine Maritime Academy teammate Doug Peters of Winslow caught two more in leading the Mariners to their third victory.

Tardif totalled 99 yards on 18 carries and Peters had 181 yards on six catches. Quarterback Ben Larrabee completed 13 of 29 passes for 268 yards and two TDs.

University of Massachusetts-Boston QB Emil Johnson completed 13 of 23 passes for 208 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown.
