BANGOR — The Bangor Theological Seminary was one of a number of recipients of the Henry Luce Foundation Inc. of New York, grants which this year amounted to $3.3 million.

The local seminary will receive a $125,000 two-year grant to provide a new electronic communication system for the seminary’s three campuses in Maine and New Hampshire.

Funding for projects such as a program to educate incoming members of Congress on the intricacies of U.S. relations with China reflects the foundation’s commitment to cultural and intellectual exchange with Pacific Rim nations. Grants in theology, including a program to train chaplains in pastoral care for the ill, emphasize theological education. Awards in public affairs and higher education support innovative programs that will help to reshape the future.

The grants reflect the wide interests of the foundation, which was established 60 years ago by the late Henry R. Luce, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc.
