Firm donates software to Maine high schools

ORONO — Microsoft Corp. has donated educational software to Maine high school students through the University of Maine Upward Bound Program, including titles such as the Encarta 1997 Encyclopedia, Scholastic’s Magic School Bus Explores the Age of Dinosaurs, Creative Writer 2 and Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker.

Upward Bound, sponsored by UMaine, works with 22 high schools, providing additional support for disadvantaged students. Students attend a six-week summer residential program at the university to work on math, science and other academic subjects.

Alan Parks, director of the UMaine program, said that the software’s value is unlimted. “Schools can order as many copies as they want from a list of 14 titles. They just need to let us know what they want, and we work with Microsoft.”

Programs for both Macintosh and DOS computers are available.
