Where is the shame?

What a sad and shameful day for America. The most distrusted and unethical president the United States has ever had is re-elected. ABC News reported that 47 percent of the people who voted for Clinton said they either distrusted him or that they thought he was not telling the whole truth on a myriad of unethical actions perpetrated by him and his wife.

David Broder, in his Wednesday morning commentary in the Bangor Daily News, praised the American people. He said, “Good job voters. Four important messages, clearly delivered.” He was referring to what he believed were four messages directed to the president and the Congress by the voters. I could not disagree more.

Only one clear message was delivered this election. The message clearly delivered by the majority of the people was that they don’t care who is in office, as long as they are financially secure. They don’t care about their elected officials being liars and cheats. They don’t care about the tangled webs being woven behind closed doors. They no longer need to have pride in the president or look upon the White House as the most honored home in America. Honesty, integrity and morality don’t matter anymore. Feelings of shame have passed from our culture.

A few days after Dick Morris, President Clinton’s right-hand man, resigned from his role within the White House because of a six-year affair with a call girl, the president issued a glowing acceptance of his resignation, but no talk of shame. Morris and his wife already have signed a $2 million book deal over his sexcapades. Where is the shame?

Michael Irving, of the Dallas Cowboys, was slapped on the wrist by the NFL for having used illicit drugs. He was out of his team’s line-up for four weeks. They and everyone at Texas Stadium welcomed him back with a standing ovation. Where is the shame?

Clinton has more scandal and reports of wrongdoing surrounding him and his wife, and has had more crooked people resign from his administration that at any time in history, but yet people are ready to give him another four years. Where is the shame?

What an awful message we are sending to our children and our young adults.

Our president and our heroes get away with their acts of sin because they are merely a reflection of whom we have become as Americans. That was the only clear message delivered. The Bible says, “Honesty can keep you safe, but if you can’t be trusted; you trap yourself.” Forty-seven percent said they did not trust Clinton. Where does that leave him? God save the president and God help us. Wilton Rose Stockton Springs
