When I was at the University of Maine at Orono, I agreed with the Nov. 8 letter of Steve Smith of Machias about parking. Twenty-five dollars a year for not enough parking does seem bad, until that figure is compared with the $50 a semester at Penn State University, where some dorm residents have to walk a mile to their cars at that price. For those that opt for bicycles, the police log three thefts a day, with some thieves stealing whatever part isn’t locked down to create a new bike from several.

With 38,000 students, millions of dollars are generated (including fines). Parking garages are built, but students aren’t allowed to use them except on weekends, when more space is available anyway. Thomas J. Wolford Chester
