GORHAM – The University of New England, University of Maine at Presque Isle, Bowdoin College and Colby men’s basketball teams were each victorious in the first round of the Third Annual Hancock Lumber Maine Event Friday.

UNE beat Husson 113-81 to advance to the winners bracket and the University of Maine at Presque Isle downed the University of Maine at Farmington, 78-75.

Also, Bowdoin beat St. Joseph’s 81-78 and Colby won a thriller over Southern Maine, 76-74.

In the opener, Senior guard Chris Kumka led five UNE players in double figures as the Wildcats rolled to victory over Husson.

Kumka scored 21 points, hitting four 3-pointers and also pulled down five rebounds. Senior Eric Werntgen scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half. Steve Huntington added 16 points, Rob Copper 12, Aaron McClure 12 and Chris McKenney 10.

Tony Tobin led the Braves with 16 points. Michael Dyt chipped in 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Brad Olson added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brian Alley also added eight.

In the second game, senior Glenn Sharp hit two free throws with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 75-75 deadlock and lead the Owls to victory.

Junior Pierre Michaud led all scorers with 24 points for UMPI. Sharp and Wille Rivera each had 11 and Brian Colman added 10. Tolland added eight rebounds.
