Maj. Glenn Avery of the Salvation Army announced Thursday that 474 applications for holiday assistance have been processed so far by the staff at the Christmas Center in Bangor. Many more are expected before the organization stops accepting applications.

If you want to have your name added to the list, apply in person between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday, at the Christmas Center, 146 Center St., Bangor.

The Santa’s Helper Fund, one of the sources of funds on which the Army depends this time of year, had reached $3,740 as of Thursday, still a long way from the goal of $30,000.

Sometimes contributors share a little of their personal experience when they mail a donation. Ralph and Arlene Mooers of Exeter wrote, “Somebody stole our safe on Oct. 18 and all the money we had saved, but I am sending a check for $25 just the same. The Salvation Army helped my husband and my parents a long time ago. So we know what it is to need help.” The Mooers certainly illustrate what is meant by sharing.

Other contributors include Annette Webber, Garland, $15; Jane Thompson and Susan Pennell, Medway, $100; Lois and William Comeau, Old Town, $50; Claire Place, Bangor, $10; Bangor Emblem Club 223, $100.

Dennis and Helen Robertson, Bangor, $5; Sherbie and Pauline Mayhew, Milford, $50; Meg, Matt, Kasey, Jake, Emily and Will, East Eddington, $30; Joe, Pat and Joey Kelley, Hampden, $30; Anonymous, in memory of Guy Boober, $100.
