Royko’s ethnic slur

The Mike Royko column which appeared in the Nov. 26 Bangor Daily News was insulting to all the people of French heritage. Where does this columnist get the right to take out his computer frustrations on an ethnic group that has nothing to do with his computer company? To make it even worse he was not even sure about the language being spoken. To quote Royko, “Then a recorded voice came on and began jabbering at me in what, I believe, was French. … After the recorded Frenchy was finished, there was a beep for me to give a recorded message of my own. So I said, `When I learn how to say kiss my butt in Frog lingo, I will call you back.’ ”

Does he think he is funny, witty, and amusing? Rather his sneering and contemptuous tone is very offensive. Ethnic jokes and racist comments get company executive and politicians in trouble but columnists have carte blanche to insult and ridicule ethnic minorities at will.

I was startled when I came upon “Frenchy” but I could not believe my eyes when I came to the “Frog” part! Who would ever expect such a prejudiced diatribe when the topic is about computers. When the BDN published that column it thumbed its nose at all its Franco-American readers. Both the BDN and Royko owe all the “Frenchies” a public apology. Marie-Anne Gauvin Madawaska
