Palmyra selectmen plan to settle dispute over fee

PALMYRA — Selectmen in Palmyra will meet in executive session in conjunction with their regular meeting tonight to discuss a conflict between current and former plumbing inspectors.

In the process of changing from former inspector Peter Ouellette to current inspector and code enforcement officer, William Murphy, a disagreement reportedly developed concerning plumbing fees, according to town office staff.

The change in personnel created confusion for some local residents as to which inspector should receive fees for specific projects.

At a recent meeting, the board was asked to advise a local property owner who needed an authorized signature on a belated-plumbing permit. The project apparently was completed before Ouellette signed the paperwork, although he reportedly was aware of it. The document still needed to be completed, but Ouellette was no longer authorized to sign it.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. to conduct a public hearing on a general assistance ordinance and to meet with town treasurer Valerie Sprague to discuss reinvestment of town savings. The executive session will follow and conclude before another public hearing scheduled at 7 p.m. for junkyard permit renewals.

In contrast to past years, town office staff said all applicants for permit renewals are in compliance and no controversy is anticipated.

The board also plans to discuss bidding on a new contract for collection of Detroit recycling. Palmyra’s recycling truck was used for the work in past years until a private contractor got the bid.
