Howlers pin Tigers in rematch> Lindsay, Smith deliver

DEXTER – Don’t let the score sheets and results fool you – there was only one wrestling meet held at Dexter High School on Saturday.

Sure, five teams showed up, and took their turns facing off against each other in a series of dual matchups that took the better part of the day. For the record, Foxcroft Academy went 2-2 on the day, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 1-3, and Madawaska 0-4.

But when it comes to a capital-M Meet – one of those matchups that injects a building with venom and bile and squeezes it out, slowly, over the course of 13 competitive matches – well, there was only one of those.

It was the rematch of last year’s most talked-about battle, during which Dexter had knocked Penobscot Valley High of Howland’s 72-dual meet winning streak off the rails.

This time Penobscot Valley won 39-31.

“I’m sweating like a pig,” jubilant Penobscot Valley coach Gerald Hutchinson said after the win, when the temperature – and intensity level in the gym – had taken a drastic drop.

“That’s my whole season. Me and [Dexter coach Dave Gudroe], we look forward to each other.”

The Howlers improved their perfect record to 9-0, while Dexter finished the day at 9-1.

Last season, the upset took place “in my house,” as Hutchinson points out.

This time around, it was Hutchinson’s squad that hit the road and proved just a little better. He just had to juggle his lineup a little to make it work out that way. In the upset, it was Gudroe who pulled out the stops and outfoxed his friend.

“He outcoached me last year,” Hutchinson said.

The move of this meet was Hutchinson’s decision to move two-time defending 103-pound state champ Matt Lindsay, a junior, up from the 112-pound class he wrestles in now to 119 to face Gudroe’s son, Adam. Though Gudroe expected it, the ploy worked.

In last season’s state finals, Lindsay edged freshman Adam Gudroe 4-2 in overtime.

In Saturday’s most stirring match, Lindsay and Gudroe spent six grueling minutes fighting for an advantage neither really achieved. Lindsay won 3-2.

“He pulled that on me last year,” Hutchinson said. “He moved his 25 [125-pounder] up to 30 [130] to beat me. I couldn’t beat ’em without moving Lindsay up.”

Lindsay said the combination of moving up in weight against a heavier, taller opponent, made the match tough.

“He’s real tall and lanky, so I was trying to stay down low and stay at his legs,” Lindsay said. “He wrestled a real good match.”

The meet featured a steady ebb-and-flow, as first Penobscot Valley, then Dexter, took the lead.

After a double forfeit at 103, PVHS took the next three matches. Then Dexter got to the meat of its order.

Trailing 15-0, the Tigers got back-to-back pins from defending state champs Ken Welch at 130 and Sean Cole at 135. The rugged juniors answered with 24-second dispatches of Matt Dobson and Nathaniel Nightingale. After decisions in the next two matches, it was 25-15, Dexter.

The Howlers answered with pins at 160, 171 and 189 by Ricky Cyr, Josh Boober and David Stenzel, respectively. That made it 33-25 PVHS with two matches to go.

Though Dexter’s George Venturelli made it close, at 33-31, when he posted a speedy pin in the 215-pound division, the Howlers had the top 275-pounder of the meet in waiting.

Robert Smith pinned John Bryer in 3:12 to ice the win.

Each coach said pre-meet figuring was on target.

“I predicted 39-30,” said Gudroe, whose Tigers face the Howlers two more times before the postseason. “We were real close on the predictions, and usually you can do that. Once in a while there’s an upset. Not today.”
