Lubec man indicted in wood lot trespass> Harvester accused of damaging trees worth $3,200

MACHIAS — A Washington County grand jury Monday indicted a Lubec man for his alleged role in a timber trespass in his hometown.

Gary Laskey, 36, was indicted on one count of aggravated criminal mischief and one count of criminal mischief, Ranger Jeffrey Currier of the Maine Forest Service in Jonesboro said Tuesday.

According to court documents, Laskey allegedly damaged or destroyed timber valued at nearly $3,200 on a wood lot that belonged to Thomas and June Chagnon, also of Lubec. The incident allegedly occurred while Laskey was timber harvesting.

The investigation took two months, according to Jim Downie, fire prevention specialist for the Maine Forest Service. There are nearly 1,200 cases of timber trespass investigated by the Maine Forest Service each year, he said.

“This investigation should put timber harvesters on notice,” Downie said. “We will investigate all complaints of this nature aggressively and see that violators are held responsible for their actions if they choose to disregard state law.”

Downie said most timber-trespass complaints came from nonresident landowners and the elderly.

Laskey is scheduled to be arraigned in Washington County Superior Court in Machias on Jan. 6. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
