BANGOR – Bleeding the clock was the only way to hang on to a lead Saturday at Bangor’s Red Barry Gymnasium.
The Presque Isle girls lost the lead with three minutes, 30 seconds left when Bangor’s Jen Harriman put back her own shot for a 36-33 lead.
Then Billie Hayward hit back-to-back 3-pointers to grab it back and squeak out Presque Isle’s 43-38 schoolgirl basketball Big East win.
The Bangor boys had a 14-point halftime lead and held off the Wildcats, who hit six of seven from the floor in the fourth quarter, for a 51-48 victory.
Bangor’s offense hit the skids in the second half as it connected for two third-quarter field goals, and only three more in the last eight minutes.
On the other end, Presque Isle was making up for a disappointing first half and hit 10 of 20 from the floor to come as close as 48-46 with 20.3 seconds left.
But Bangor’s Mike Arsenault hit Thomas True with a 3/4-court inbounds pass and True made the layup with 17 seconds left for a 50-46 lead and the win.
“I was very proud,” said Presque Isle boys coach Tim Prescott. “We were down and out at halftime, and we said hey, either we’re going to go out and make a game of this, and they did.
“It was gritty,” he said. “It’s good to see your team go out and play gritty when they have to, because some night we’re going to make those shots and look like a great team and beat somebody.”
The Bangor girls put together a 8-2 run, spanning late in the third quarter to early in the fourth, to grab a 36-33 lead behind frontcourt baskets from Amanda Stevens, Jen Sarjeant and Harriman.
But Hayward hit a big 3-pointer from the top at the 3:01 mark, and a second one 46 seconds later, before Bangor’s Sarjeant popped a 10-foot jumper to cut the lead to 39-38 with 1:57 left.
The Wildcats called timeout 21 seconds later and spent the next minute spreading out Bangor’s defense, until the Rams were forced to foul with 29.3 seconds left.
Hayward, who finished with eight points, connected on both free throws, and Bangor finally regained the ball trailing 41-38.
But Presque Isle’s Angela Pulcifur blocked Harriman’s shot from the lane, and Shannon Reynolds hit two free throws with 18.3 seconds left, to lock up the win.
The Wildcats held the lead through the first half only to lose it at the buzzer when Emily Morse hit a 3-pointer to boost the Rams to a 26-25 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive deathgrip as both teams clamped down on the inside game and wound up combining for four field goals in eight minutes.
Reynolds led the Wildcats, now 3-0, with 12 points and two blocked shots. Kim Condon added nine points, six rebounds and five steals.
Bangor, now 2-1, held the rebounding edge 27-17, thanks in part to Harriman’s 10 boards. She scored a team-high 11 points.
“They move to the basket real well offensively when they have that ball,” Presque Isle coach Dick Barstow said. “What we kept trying to do in the second half was make them shoot outside, and they still kept trying to go inside.
“Of course, they capitalized a couple of times but we closed that down a little bit,” he said.
The Presque Isle boys began their comeback with a 10-4 spurt in the third quarter, sparked by pair of close-range baskets Jake Robertson, to trail 38-28 after three quarters.
Robertson began Presque Isle’s 16-8 scoring sprint with a post shot on a Kasey Keenan assist with 3:35 left to cut the lead to 42-32.
Six seconds later, Torey McPherson hit both free throws and Chad Graham knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to bring the Wildcats to within 43-37.
Keenan made two from the line but Bangor’s Tom Waterman drove baseline to get the lead back to 46-39 with 1:29 remaining.
Waterman earned his fifth foul when Keenan hit a 3-pointer from the right side with 1:12 left, and the Wildcats senior guard made a foul shot to cut the lead to three.
Bangor ran the clock down and Presque Isle fouled Mike Wilcox, who hit both free throws with 31.7 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats picked up three more points from a Jon Blanchard free throw and Robertson’s put back with 20.3 seconds on the clock.
Jason St. Pierre led Bangor, now 2-1, with 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Waterman and Arsenault each had nine points.
Roberston finished with 11 points and Keenan added 10 for Presque Isle, which drops to 1-2.
Despite the win, Bangor coach Roger Reed wasn’t happy with the team’s lack of second-half offense and intensity.
“We had Mike [Wilcox] out with fouls, we had Jake [Civiello] out, we just go into a bad situation,” Reed said of the fourth quarter. “That’s happened to us in the last two games. We’ve had people in foul trouble for two straight games now.
“Last time it was Saint and Jake,” he said. “We don’t have a whole lot of experienced depth right now that can come in and play.”
