BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

The most recent reports indicate that both the number of homeless individuals (especially families) and the length of time they are homeless are increasing (wire service and television, Dec. 15 and 16). As long as there are people with no place to call home, there will continue to be a need for shelters.

As I near the end of my first year as director of The Greater Bangor Area Shelter, I am simultaneously distressed by the scope of the homeless problem and thankful that the location of this shelter is in Bangor, Maine.

I didn’t know much about this “business” last January. I was very ignorant about the depth and range of needs, and similarly unaware of the volume of good work this agency has been providing for the last ten years. But what has really stood out, especially during these previous two months, is the commitment of the greater Bangor community to support our efforts and powerfully make a difference in people’s lives.

Since the end of November, I have had the privilege of being able to witness a strong infusion of financial support in response to our annual appeal. I am able to watch people come to volunteer, to drop off food, clothing, furniture and personal care items. I had the opportunity to smile on Thanksgiving as I watched about 30 volunteers work together in a kitchen designed for three or four. I’ve been able to spend some of my time in front of cameras, as local businesses and organizations presented this shelter with much needed support from their dedicated efforts. Almost every evening I meet individuals and small groups who, having cooked in their own kitchens, come to this shelter to serve a meal for 30 to 35 homeless and-or low-income folk. And I get to see people smile.

So this is my attempt to publicly thank all of our supporters this year. From myself, our staff and volunteers, and our board Of Directors, please know that our appreciation is heartfelt. Dennis R. Marble Executive director The Greater Bangor Area Homeless Shelter
