Fire Department issues reminder to label homes

BANGOR — It is no exaggeration that a life may hang in the balance as rescuers race up darkened city streets searching for obscure house numbers to locate people suffering heart attacks or life-threatening injuries.

The Bangor Fire Department has issued a reminder to city residents and businesses to post street numbers clearly on the outside of buildings.

Many calls in recent months have resulted in delays as emergency workers have been forced to slow down to see numbers or to guess where the correct address is.

Also, the city property maintenance code requires that every building have its street number clearly marked with 3-inch numbers or letters on a color contrasting to the building. Landlords must number and letter each apartment. For information call the Fire Department at 942-6335 or the code enforcement office at 945-4400.
