Mainers arrested in Louisiana killing > Stabbing victim allegedly blew kiss at one of three suspects

DURHAM, N.C. — Three Maine men suspected of stabbing a man to death in Louisiana for blowing a kiss were arrested when their car broke down during their flight home.

A Durham County sheriff’s deputy responding to a routine call about three stranded motorists early Sunday learned that the men were wanted for a murder committed a day earlier in Slidell, La.

Troy Vinal Glidden, 20, of Springfield, Maine, and Russell McAlpine, 19, were arrested on second-degree murder charges. Rex Allen Burrill, 20, was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. Hometowns in Maine were not available for McAlpine and Burrill.

The victim — Danny Winstead — was stabbed to death in a room at the King’s Guest Lodge in Slidell. He was said to have blown a kiss to Glidden, according to warrants issued in St. Tammany Parish, La.

The three men apparently were on the way back to Maine when their Pontiac Grand Prix broke down in Durham.

“It just died,” Sheriff’s Lt. D.R. Ladd said.

The men did not seem nervous when Deputy R.L. Rose Jr. pulled into the Mobil gas station on East Club Boulevard at Interstate 85 to help them, Ladd said.

“Two of them were walking down Club Boulevard when Rose pulled up and they turned around and walked back to him,” he said.

More details of the incident were not being released on Monday.

The three men were being held without bond in the Durham County Jail while awaiting extradition back to Louisiana.
