HERMON – It was an interesting way to start a game.
The Mount Desert Island Trojans committed turnovers on their first two possessions before senior forward Brianne Barker hit an eight-footer with 6:49 left in the first quarter.
On the next possession, senior point guard Erin Shaw turned her ankle as she attempted a 3-pointer. Shaw sat out for the first half but came back in the second half.
But the Trojans methodically put together a 16-2 run on the way to a 70-42 schoolgirl basketball victory over the Hermon Hawks Monday night.
Katy Lawson hit two in the post and Barker worked for two more from the paint before Shelagh Slack came off the bench and turned a steal and defensive rebound into back-to-back layups.
Then Hermon’s Nancy Doughty took an inbounds pass following Slack’s last basket and scored for MDI with 41 seconds left in the quarter.
Barker, the closest player to Doughty, was credited with the basket for MDI’s 18-6 lead.
With four players with nine or more points, MDI put together a balanced attack which proved unbeatable.
“We play pretty good defense, we press pretty well, we handle the ball pretty well, we shoot from outside pretty well,” MDI coach Burt Barker, Brianne’s dad, said. “I think we’re pretty good at everything but I can name you a dozen teams in Eastern Maine that do something better than we can.”
Hermon mounted a comeback with 13-6 spree to come as close as 28-22 with 54 seconds left in the half.
The Hawks got a pair of 16-footers from Diane Rines, Ambre Hichborn, and two jumpers from Pam Poland during the 4:17 run.
The Trojans answered with a conventional three-point play and post basket from first-year varsity forward Lawson in the last 36 seconds to extend the lead to 33-22.
Lawson, who finished with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, then hit four free throws to jump start the second half and put the Trojans on track to a 8-2 sprint and a 41-24 lead with 4:23 left in the third.
She racked up 10 points in 11 attempts from the line to lead the Trojans, who finished 20 of 35.
Barker racked 16 points, 13 rebounds and three steals and assists. Slack finished with eight points and five steals and a blocked shot. Crystal Graves had nine points.
“We started putting a little more full-court pressure on, and that helped us out,” Hermon coach Bob Clukey said. “When we saw Erin go out, we thought we might have a little bit of a chance to press full-court. We put out a good effort.”
Lisa Darrah came off the bench to keep it interesting for Hermon, now 0-8, as she moved from the post to the perimeter and hit 3 of 5 3-point attempts.
Darrah led the Hawks with 11 points and six rebounds, all of which came in the second half.
The Trojans, now 8-1, used their height advantage to carve out a 42-21 rebounding gap.
MDI also committed 16 first-half turnovers before finishing with 21, just three ahead of Hermon’s final 18.
