DEER ISLE — Firefighters endured 15-degree temperatures and 30-knot winds to attack a blaze reported in an unoccupied camper around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Chief Richard Haskell of the Deer Isle Fire Department said crews from five towns responded, finding the 25-foot camper on Reach Road in flames. Despite their spending more than an hour at the scene, the camper was destroyed.

Firefighters feared that camper owner Dan Haskell, no relation to the fire chief, might still be inside. But the owner, who was elsewhere at the time, was located unharmed several hours later.

The cause of the fire was not known Wednesday. The fire chief said possible points of origin include an electrical cord that had been severed by a snowplow, kerosene lights, or a gas heater.
