Job Corps center to get 125 computers

LIMESTONE — The new Loring Job Corps Center will receive 125 computers compliments of the U.S. Department of Labor, according to an announcement Monday from Rep. John E. Baldacci’s office.

The IBM 486 computers will help Job Corps officials make its Limestone facility the first “center of innovation” in the nation. The new center is expected to immerse each of its students into computer technology, in addition to their other studies, as part of the new program.

While the computers will be compatible with the computers already installed at the Job Corps center, it’s unknown whether the equipment is new or is surplus in the department’s inventory.

“Knowledge of computer technology is increasingly necessary for success in the marketplace,” said Baldacci in a prepared statement. “This donation represents an important investment in our young people and in our economy.”
