PORTLAND — A messy winter storm that pelted Maine with a mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain wound down Wednesday afternoon after causing travel problems for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Road conditions improved, but drivers were advised to remain alert for icy spots and areas of street flooding caused by clogged storm drains.

The storm, which began as snow throughout the region, quickly changed to rain along the coast and to sleet and freezing rain in many inland sections.

Schools in some areas were closed for the day because of transportation difficulties.

Icy and flooded roads slowed morning commuter traffic. The speed limits on the Maine Turnpike and Interstate 95 were lowered to 45 mph.

State and local police reported a rash of storm-related accidents around the state, most involving vehicles that slid off the road. No serious injuries were reported, but a rollover on the Maine Turnpike backed up traffic.
