Maine men end conference slump, top UNH

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of Maine men’s basketball team survived eight ties and four lead changes to post a 57-53 America East win over the University of New Hampshire at Whittemore Center Saturday night.

The win was the Black Bears’ first conference road victory since Jan. 2 and snapped a four-game league losing streak.

Maine improved to 9-15, 5-8 in the conference. The Wildcats dropped to 6-15, 5-9.

Senior guard Ramone Jones scored 16 points to lead the Black Bears, while forward Terry Hunt pitched in with 15 and John Gordon added 10. Allen Ledbetter grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his eight points.

Brad Cirino notched 14 points for the Wildcats, while Carmen Maciariello scored 11.

The Black Bears and Wildcats battled for the entire second half. The ‘Cats led by as many as seven after the break, but sophomore guard Gordon pulled Maine within one at 37-36 on a 3-pointer with 14:05 to go.

After that, neither team led by more than three until Maine’s Hunt iced it on a free throw with only 1.8 seconds left.

New Hampshire guard Cirino provided the game’s final tie when he scored on a tip with 2:06 left. Maine’s Ledbetter broke the 51-51 deadlock with a layup at 1:48.

After UNH failed to score, Ledbetter nailed the front end of a one-and-one with 22.5 seconds left to give the Bears a 54-51 edge.

Former John Bapst star Ken Rassi (eight points, eight rebounds) pulled the Wildcats within one when he grabbed a missed Jason Hernandez 3-point attempt with a layup with 10 seconds to play.

But Gordon, the league’s top free throw shooter, was fouled before any time was allowed to tick off the clock and made both ends of the bonus situation to give Maine another 3-point lead.

After the teams stacked two full timeouts and a 20-second break on top of each another with 5.3 seconds left, UNH’s final possession came up empty and Hunt was fouled.
