BREWER – Winslow High School, the defending state Class B hockey champion, received the quality goaltending it needed from junior Jon Taylor in the first period, then shifted into overdrive for a 5-0 win over a gritty Hampden Academy team at Bouchard Arena Wednesday.
The 18-1 Black Raiders have won 13 straight this season and 25 in a row against Class B competition. Hampden, which played well but fell victim to Winslow’s superior depth, finished its regular season at 9-11.
Senior captain and right wing Seth Karter scored a pair of goals, junior center and linemate Mark Gunning had a goal and two assists to bring his career point total to 197, and Taylor finished with 23 saves to spark the win.
Taylor’s shutout was his fourth of the season.
Junior right wing Nick McCann and senior center Chad Dubois had the other goals and senior defenseman Dan Allen had a pair of assists.
“We came out kind of slow in the first period. We aren’t used to having people outshoot us in the first period,” said Gunning, who now has 42 goals and 38 assists on the season. “That was one of the key things Coach [Lee Bureau] told us between periods. We played pretty good in the seBureau told us between periods. We played pretty good in the second and third periods.”
Hampden outshot Winslow 13-9 in the first period, but trailed 1-0 as Taylor thwarted them.
Winslow outshot Hampden 30-10 the rest of the way.
“They were shooting a lot to my high blocker side from outside. I told our defense I can handle the outside shots, just don’t let them inside,” said Taylor. “After the first period, we thought about how important the game was and we felt we had to step up and take charge.”
“He made some big saves,” said Hampden senior winger Rob King, who saw Taylor get his pad on his third-period breakaway. “He’s a big goalie and he was on his angle, so it was hard to get the puck behind him.”
Karter scored the only goal in the first period when he tipped Gunning’s shot over Hampden goalie Brian Cataldo.
McCann made it 2-0 2:35 into the middle period off a Brad White rebound.
“The goalie slid across the net, and I put it back from where he had come from,” said McCann.
Karter made it 3-0 later in the second period with a 10-footer following a furious flurry around the Hampden net.
“The puck popped out, I got away from the traffic a little, I knew I had time, and I put it in the net,” said Karter.
Dubois and Gunning capped the scoring in the third period when they finished off their own great individual efforts.
“Our kids played hard from the opening whistle, and that’s all I can ask for,” said Bronco coach Paul Henderson. “We made some mistakes, and if you make mistakes against a team as good as Winslow, they’ll make you pay.”
