Scarborough, Greely claim championships

ORONO – Triple jumper Sarah Keenan hop, skipped, and jumped farther than any other Class B indoor trackster had before Saturday, achieving a high school dream.

The fact that the Foxcroft Academy senior’s gritty performance – she tied the previous state record once and surpassed it twice – didn’t even provide the winning effort was evidence of a day full of stellar moments.

In all, six records were set at the Class B state championships held at the University of Maine field house.

The Scarborough boys continued their dominance, winning their eighth state title with an 84-67 win over Orono. Ellsworth had 36, Leavitt 30, and Hampden 28 to round out the top five.

On the girls side, Greely benefited from the disqualification of the victorious Scarborough 880-yard relay team in the meet’s final event to post a 58-55 win. The Redskins’ first runner ran out of her lane on the staggered leg.

Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln was third with 35, while Foxcroft Academy had 34 and Hebron Academy 30.

Keenan’s fate was sealed on the final jump of a torrid duel with Greely star Katie Getz, who had upped the record from 36-3 to 37-5 3/4. Four of Getz’s jumps were better than the previous mark.

Keenan held the record briefly, setting a new state standard of 37-1 on her third trials jump. Getz promptly answered with back-to-back 37-4 3/4 efforts before reaching 37-5 3/4 on her final jump.

Keenan’s final leap was the longest of the day – 37-10 – but Keenan’s final leap was the longest of the day – 37-10 – but she fouled by about an inch.

“I feel pretty good because I jumped good, but some day I’d like to beat Kate,” Keenan said. “I get second to her every time I compete with her.”

Getz keyed the Rangers to the title, winning another battle with friend Meg Muller of Hebron Academy in the high jump. Both jumpers leaped a state-record 5-4, but Getz had fewer misses at the height.

The speedy sophomore Muller won two other events, blazing a 1:29.25 in the 600 and setting a state mark in the 60-yard hurdles (8.54).

Mattanawcook Academy freshman Mary LeBrun capped her season with state titles in the mile and two-mile.

She unleashed a potent kick in the mile, running the final lap six seconds faster than her nearest competitor to finish in 5:35.33. In the two-mile, she accelerated with six laps left and cruised to the win.

“I was really surprised,” LeBrun said of her double win. “I never dreamed of this. I mean, I never got any firsts in cross country.”

Orono’s Kate Yerxa threw the shot 37-11 3/4 to post the win, while Scarborough’s Jen Sutyak won the inaugural state meet girls pole vault, clearing 8-6.

On the boys side, Scarborough won no individual events, but took second and third in the 60 and 300 and seconds in the hurdles and 600 to set the stage for a record-breaking relay run.

The team of Andrew Locke, Kyle Webber, Greg Hobbs, and Jessemar Ross put the finishing touches on the Redskins’ fourth straight team title with a 1:34.57.

Scarborough was able to hold off the front-line strength of Orono, which got two wins each from Craig Sidell (60, 300) and Mike Pare (pole vault, high jump).

“We weren’t thinking about winning states,” Sidell said. “We thought we had a chance, but we weren’t thinking about it.”

Willy Hall of Leavitt emerged as the boys’ only triple winner, taking firsts in the hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.

But the meet’s top performance was turned in by Sumner senior Parker Pruett. Pruett destroyed the existing record in the 1,000, running a 2:14.46. Former Mattanawcook Academy and Dartmouth College standout Sam Wilbur ran a 2:17.13 in 1990. Pruett is headed to Dartmouth in the fall.

“I wanted to go out hard and really not have a whole lot left at the end of my race, and that’s what I did,” said Pruett, who often runs races from behind and wins on a devastating kick.

Pruett ran his first 440 in 57 seconds and hit the half mile in 1:57 en route to the record.

Ellsworth senior Joey Luchini won the mile and two-mile.
