BANGOR – After seeing his team surrender 13 points in the game’s first 2:31, Schenck High School boys basketball coach Steve Levasseur decided his 3-2 zone wasn’t going to stop Washington Academy’s perimeter shooting in their Eastern Maine Class C boys quarterfinal Monday at the Bangor Auditorium.

So the sixth-seeded Wolverines employed a triangle-and-two and the result was dramatic as they held the Raiders to only 16 points during the next 17 minutes en route to a 74-60 upset of the third seed.

Schenck (12-7) will play No. 2 Narraguagus, a 73-48 winner over No. 7 Woodland, in Friday’s 3:35 p.m. semifinal at the Bangor Auditorium. WA finished at 12-6.

“Our triangle-and-two really crossed them up and, with our rebounding, we didn’t allow them any second opportunities,” said junior guard Chris Wyman, who scored 18 points, dished out four assists and did an exceptional job handling the ball against Washington Academy’s press.

“The triangle-and-two was effective. Our outside shooting was dead after the first two minutes,” said WA junior forward Josh Ramsdell.

Wyman’s role took on added importance because point guard Nate Jamo was in foul trouble throughout the game.

Jamo still finished with 14 points.

Senior center Mike Kimball controlled the boards and displayed his versatility by handling the ball effectively.

The 6-foot-3-inch Kimball and 6-4 sophomore center Peter Ciarrocchi worked several nifty passing combinations down low.

Kimball finished with a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and five assists and Ciarrocchi came off the bench to produce 11 points and three assists.

“We have had problems rebounding this year but we boxed out real nice tonight,” said Kimball. “We held them to one shot and out.”

“They controlled the game inside. We didn’t get anything inside,” said WA Coach Buddy Wood, who received 19 points from Brandon Ashby and 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds from Ramsdell.

Schenck took the lead for good with a 20-2 run over the first and second periods that erased a 13-7 deficit. Jamo had three three-pointers in the spurt.

An 18-7 run spanning the second and third quarters extended Schenck’s lead to 48-32. The Raiders connected on just three of their first 19 shots in the second half.

In the nightcap, Narraguagus was simply too big and too athletic for the Dragons, whom they had beaten twice during the regular season and once in a tournament.

“They’ve got a small team, so we tried to get out on their wings and box them out,” said Narraguagus junior forward Nick Lyford, who had 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Narraguagus coach Vincent MacLean said his team also played exceptional defense.

“We played a 2-1-2 and we matched up on [Josh] Thornton and [Tony] Robb,” said MacLean.

“They shut us down,” said Robb, who had a team-high 12 points.

Senior guard Eric Benge had a game-high 25 points and added seven rebounds and four assists.

“We knew if we played our game, we were the better team,” said Benge, who triggered the fast-break offense.

Narraguagus broke the game open with a run of 11 unanswered points in the second period. Lyford and Jared Look each had four points as Narraguagus built a 31-17 lead. Robb hit three baskets to close out the half but picked up his fourth foul early in the second half.

Adam Meyer’s four points and Benge’s traditional three-point play keyed a 9-2 flurry in the third period that built the lead to 18 and put the game away.

Meyer finished with 13 points and Look had 10 rebounds.

Daryl Huwa had 10 points and nine rebounds for Woodland and Thornton had seven assists.
