Playoffs await MAC> UM-Farmington defeats UMPI Owls

The last regular season weekend of collegiate play served to finalize the field for the Maine Athletic Conference basketball playoffs. The men’s tournament starts Tuesday and the women’s kicks off Wednesday.

The top-seeded St. Joseph’s men, No. 1 UMaine-Farmington women and No. 2 St. Joseph’s women all get an opening-round bye.

In the mens’ quarterfinals, No. 7 Thomas College will meet No. 2 Husson College at Newman Gym in Bangor, No. 6 UMaine-Machias faces No. 3 UMaine-Presque Isle in the Star City, and No. 5 University of New England travels to meet No. 4 UM-Farmington.

In the women’s quarterfinals, No. 6 UM-Presque Isle will be at No. 3 U-New England and No. 5 UM-Machias heads to Waterville to get at No. 4 Thomas.

The semifinals and finals for both tournaments are set for the Bangor Auditorium on March 2 and 3.

Men’s basketball

UM-Farmington 95, UMPI 89

At Farmington, brothers Daren and Lance Meader powered the Beavers past the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday.

Daren poured in a game-high 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Lance pumped in 20 and dished out 12 assists for the Beavers. Laughn Berthiaume netted four 3-pointers on his way to 15 points and Ben Redstone contributed 12 for the winners.

Pierre Michuad tossed in 23 points to lead UM-Presque Isle as Matt Townsend popped in 20, Brian Colman scored 13, Glenn Sharp had 13, and Ray King chipped in 11.

At Framingham, Mass., Scott Richardson scored his 1,000th career point during a 19-point performance to lead UMaine-Fort Kent to the win in the New England Small College Tournament Saturday.

UMFK used a balanced offense as Kareem Duncombe scored 11 points, Arthur Jarrett 15, and his brother, Anthony, added 16.

Jason Cwicklienski netted 26 and Shawn Spadeau added 10 for Central Maine Technical College of Auburn.
