MIAMI – The Florida International University Golden Panthers battered University of Maine pitching with 17 hits en route to a 9-0 blanking of the Black Bears Friday night.

UMaine pitchers Dave Foran, Brian Glover, and Jared Cochran combined to allow two home runs, eight earned runs and two walks. Foran (12 hits and seven runs in 5 2/3 innings) took the loss in the Black Bears’ season-opener.

Jeff Longo and T.J. Sheedy combined for four of the Bears’ five hits. Longo led Maine with a double and a single. Sheedy chipped in with a pair of singles.

Maine will play the 14-3 Panthers twice more with one game each on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Each game will start at 1 p.m.
