ATLANTA – University of Maine junior guard Cindy Blodgett was named to the 1997 Kodak District 1 All-America Basketball Team Wednesday.
The 5-foot-9 Clinton native is one of 45 Division I finalists nationwide, as chosen by Women’s Basketball Coaches Association member coaches in nine WBCA geographical districts, and is in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak All-America team.
Blodgett, the nation’s leading scorer, is a repeat selection on the District I list, which includes Nykesha Sales and Kara Wolters of Connecticut.
The other two District 1 honorees are Allison Feaster of Harvard and Nadine Malcolm of Providence.
The final selections will be made during the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Cincinnati March 23-24 and be announced in a 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 24, press conference. Those not chosen will be recognized as Kodak Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Louisiana State University, which Blodgett and the UMaine squad will face in Saturday’s 9:30 p.m. contest in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tournament, had their own 5-9 guard, senior Elaine Powell, placed on the District 6 team.
